There are two options to go to Chiang Rai.

1. The whole trip by bus. There are different kind of buses and vans going to Chiang Rai. Just ask some information when you are in Chiang Mai or go to the Chang Puak Bus Terminal on Chang Puak road near Chang Puak Hotel and Novotel.

2. You can travel by bus up to Thaton and take a boat over the Kok river. For departure times please check the internet.

For your other request I would suggest to arrange it when you are in Chiang Rai or maybe other TripAdvisors have some ideas.

The boat leaves from Thaton at 12:30 daily. You can opt to take a day tour from Chiang Mai, stopping along the way at various locations - Elephant Camp, caves, etc and then stay overnight in Thaton to pick up the 12:30 boat, or you can take a very early morning bus. The boat is about 4 hours - an interesting experience although a bit tiresome towards the end. It is a longboat.

Hi milkyd2,

We recently had two weeks in Chiang Mai and went on a side trip to Chiang Rai for three days.

I asked a similar question to yours on the forum.

The advice I was given by many forum regulars was to take the Green VIP Bus. This bus leaves 5 times a day and seats around 18 people. It is direct to Chiang Rai (so many not meet all of your needs).

It takes just under three hours. A very comfortable ride with large windows to take in the scenery. The cost for this bus is around 295B.

The buses to Chiang Rai leave from the Arcade Bus Station in Chiang Mai. If you want to get the Green VIP bus, you need to book a few days in advance. Just go to the Arcade Bus Station to book. You even get to select your seats on booking.

You can hire a guide/driver when you are in Chiang Rai to take you around the area. There are a number of recommendations for guides in the area on the Chiang Rai forum - check out Jermsak and Tony. Lots of posts about them on the Chiang Rai forum page.

I have a trip report on our three days in Chiang Rai and the things we did. If you click on my profile you%26#39;ll see the Chiang Rai Trip report around mid October. Some of the information there may help you.

These OLD Posts still keep popping up LMAO

Going to Chiangrai from Chiangmai it%26#39;s easy by bus . If you want to take the boat, you have to take the bus to Ta-ton and take the boat to Chiangrai again.

For the places you want to go such as Doi Tung , Doi Mae Salong , you%26#39;d better rent the car because it%26#39;s not the public car will go to that area.

would agree with last poster the most convienient way is get yourself a private car and driver, there are many sugguestions on here, that way you can stop along the way and check things out at your pace and as you please.
