Diving in May - a bad idea?

Hubby, 14mo old baby, and I will be traveling to SE Asia in mid May for a dive and relaxing vacation. Would love to go to Thailand but I%26#39;m worried about the monsoon season. Is this a bad idea to plan on diving during this time of year? Which area would be best? Any recommendations about where to stay that would be good for both baby and parents?

We are not tied to Thailand if there is another part of SE Asia that would better serve our needs.

You are correct, in May the best diving weatherwise would be Koh Tao.

Koh tao is situated in the Gulf of Thailand and that is a different weather pattern from the south west area. Koh tao would be quite busy in May as popular that time of year for weather.

In addition to budget accommodation there are now some very nice resorts, we do not know what your budget is but some good places to stay on the island.

Try some of the Koh Tao luxury accommodation, some ideas are Jamahkiri about US$155, Coral Grand $ 107, Koh tao Montra $94, Charm Churee ( very nice ) 71, sensi Resort 61, that gives you a rough idea.

With a 14 month old though you need of course to take care to get suitable accommodation, not sure how you feel about the travel aspect as you either need to fly to Koh tao and take ferry from there or the alternative is train and ferry or overnight bus and ferry.

Perhaps considor with a baby to stay on a resort on Samui and then do dive trips from there, though you could only go one of you at a time.

Also please do appreciate taking a 14 month old baby on a long distance journey has it%26#39;s own implications.

Not wishing to put you off the idea but had you trhough perhaps of some place nearer to CA perhaps Mexico or somewhere that involves a much shorter flight.

Thanks for your advice, Monica. We%26#39;ll already be in Taiwan visiting relatives, which is why the stopover in Thailand won%26#39;t be so bad as it initially sounds! That said, I do realize from our many trips with the little guy already that traveling with a toddler can be challenging! I think we will opt for flight and ferry rather than train or bus, and we are looking for something in the more ';luxurious'; category. I%26#39;ve also read about Krabi. Is this on the west side (where there might be monsoons)? Thanks again!
