Dogs....... some advice pls!

Hi

I have been doing a fair bit of research on Thailand - hotels in Bangkok and staying in Hua Hin. I don%26#39;t want to come across as ignorant but..... do some Thais eat dog meat? Or some parts of Thailand maybe?

Sorry if this question offends some people - but it is something that is bugging me and I need to know - partly so I am not too sickened if I see them for sale in markets etc.

Thanks

Shirley

Dogs....... some advice pls!

We have been to Hua Hin and Bangkok twice , we have never seen anything like this, in fact when we were in hua hin we made freinds with a stray, the staff and holiday makers were sneaking him sausages, dont forget a lot of Thailanders are Buddists and respect all animals, in fact we visited a dog sanctuary set up by the King.

You are extremely unlikely to come across anything like this.

Dogs....... some advice pls!

Shirley,

We%26#39;ve been to Thailand about 15 times including Bangkok and Hua Hin and I%26#39;ve never come accross dog on the menu. Dogs (usually pure bred) are sold on markets but as far as I know not for food. S Korea on the other hand does have restaurants which specialise in dog and have pictures(of dogs) over the door and in the windows.

If seeing dogs(pets) for sale in cages in the local markets upsets you,don%26#39;t go,I%26#39;m sure one of the Thailand experts on this forum can advise which markets to avoid.I believe they%26#39;re on sale on Chatuchak market in Bangkok but it%26#39;s so huge we%26#39;ve never seen them!

don%26#39;t worry Harry.

HI, lived here five years and only time dog meat has been mentioned to me was connected with Laos and the border region of Thailand near there, no chance of seing dog anywhere in a tourist area, anyway these people are Bhuddists that stray dog in the street may have been cousin Lek in a previous incarnation, in fact if you are a dog lover you can spend all your holiday feeding the strays as there are millions here.

As an animal lover, I was concerned about seeing stray dogs in Thailand and the state they might be in. I have to say, although they are skinny and not in as good condition as dogs in the UK, seeing them didn%26#39;t upset me in any way. They mostly looked to be ok and living a natural lifestyle outside. Far better in fact in many ways than dogs left cooped up all day by themselves in flats and houses. I felt sorry for the older dogs, whos old bones must ache lying down on concrete pavements but, apart from that, I really don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll see anything distressing.

Thanks for all your reassurances. I thought it strange I never heard it mentioned at all with all the reading i%26#39;ve been doing, but I seem to have a memory of seeing it on the TV years ago.

Anyway, thanks again.

Shirley

Hi

The only province that I know some people eat dogs is in Sakonakorn, northeastern city. It is welknown from the local.

Most Thai people do not eat dogs though.

We find it is weird and nasty to ead dog too.

i agree with charlie- the dogs living %26#39;around and about%26#39; seemed fairly well fed- we saw the same dogs every day at Saphan Taksin station - they would lay on the stone benches all day and sit around all evening- they definitely were not skinny so I felt much happier.

The place where you see too much dog-meat is Vietnam- as much as we absolutely loved Hanoi- walking into a market and coming face-to-face with dog meat on a counter was absolutely sickening to my stomach.

Dog for food ?. Slaughtered in the open i.e, markets ?. Fried on street vendors BBQ ?.

6 years experience in Thailand and i never came across gourmet dog meat for human consumption after venturing into markets, sois, small restaurants where no foreigners go to .

The only ';extra meaty experience '; was near the Thai Malaysian border where a Thai cut a snake, milked its blood ( for an Indian tourist to drink ! ), slowly tore of the skin, and the reptile then went into the kitchen for this particular customer%26#39;s stomach.

the thai,s eat such strange things though !

ive eaten deep fried bugs on my last trip, the bar girls love them , also grubs and other insects --snakes too

the bugs i ate, look like cockroaches --quite large, black colour

you only eat the rear end

its got a dark coloured meat inside --quite a strong taste

(ill try anything once!)

ive eaten horse in the middle east, and cat in trowbridge (uk) un-intentionally from a chinese t/away (';mixed meat curry'; the menu said--)

Well Shirley:

To put your mind at ease, there is only one place in Thailand that dog is in the menu and it%26#39;s in the Northeast - a place called Sakon (sp).

However, you will see dogs for sale in markets in Bangkok, in particular at Chatchuchak. But my understanding however is that they are for purely petting, fetching and rolling over type activities for the family.

I do have a question for you, I have been doing some research and I heard that horse meat is for sale in parts of the UK? Is this true, I don%26#39;t want to be shocked if I see it on the menu. (kidding :)
