James Fashion International

Hi,

I also went to James Fashion International, and have the following advice:

STAY CLEAR of this rip-off joint!!!

They have armed guards at the entrance which should be ample explanation on what kind of place you should expect in entering.

A tuktuk also brought me here while it was not where I had asked to be brought. He was admittedly given a commission for doing so after spending nearly a thousand pounds. They placed alot of pressure in buying, more than I was needed. Which would have been fine had the material and stitching been up to par.

The quality was tragically off-base, and so was the tailoring!! The stitching was in fact way off: pants fell apart at the stitching within just two weeks. The material I selected was similar but NOT THE SAME as I found in the store. The fit was neither close nor comfortable.

This is rather amusing in retrospect, considering the website (http://www.james-fashion.com/) and location on Sukhothai Road give a false impression of a top notch business. Some renown Western fashion guru should review this SHAM business!

The SERVICE IS BASED ON EXTORTION... You wasting time and money, and tipping excessively for what amounts to a disreputable shoppe purely and simply.

The expertise at James Fashion on Sukhothai Road lies not in its tailoring but in the ART OF CONNING tourist travelers.

Stay clear, stay clear, stay clear - Well, you can%26#39;t say you weren%26#39;t warned :)

James Fashion International

i used jame fashion and was disgusted by the quality of the clothes. the buttons fell off on the coat I had made on the first time i wore it when i got back.

I told them several times that I had friends who were coming and that if the quality was good, i would order on line. They refused to take this into account and had several bad fittings where they try to tell you that they did it correctly when you can tell it doesn%26#39;t fit.

Very sloppy work. i would not recommend them to anyone.

James Fashion International

james fashion is KNOWN for its scamming process. Read through this forum and you will find plenty of reports just like yours

According to this recent post on the thaivisa Bangkok forum, Savile Row, Excelsior Fashion and Tailor Pro are all affiliated with James Fashion.

thaivisa.com/forum/Tailor-Experience-Savile-鈥?/a>

Can anyone confirm this?

Their brothers in arms the infamous Savile Row Internet fake forum spammers are now attempting to spam YouTube (just started happening)

Probably the same guys they hire to write all their fake reviews etc...

As connected as James Fashion is, I would assume they are buying out the competition.

I didn%26#39;t know that they speak such poor English in Ireland. James Fashion must have ordered his sweeper to quickly reply to these posts.

Priceless!

Nice one, diatheke. So you are promoting privatetourthailand.com as well?

Driver in Phuket

Hello fellow travellers,

We will be in Phuket in 2 weeks (counting the days!) - Is it better to organise a driver before we arrive or wait until we get there?

If so, can you please recommend a driver who speaks reasonable english?

Much appreciated!

Cheers

MJC

Driver in Phuket

My recommendations; Mai (hknuch@hotmail.com) and Koy (koyphuketdriver@hotmail.com). Both speak english well, are trustworthy, reliable and friendly.

Best to book before you go.

Driver in Phuket

I have used Pure Car Rent http://www.purecarrent.com , they also have car with driver. But if you can drive, driving in Phuket is not difficult. Just drive carefully and beware motorcycle.

good luck

So Augie, are you the owner or do you just work there ? Remember, beware motorcycle, lol.

I would recommend Daj ( kanidaj@hotmail.com) , he speaks English, safe driver, has great sense of humor ! I emailed Daj before leaving Oz .

We also used a tuk tuk driver named Tom (mobile 081-6195081) ...he owns a very cool tuk tuk, comfy seats and clean, and he always played music for us ;)

We would call Tom and he would pick up from our hotel, and then call him again when we were ready to go back to hotel. Tom was very friendly and safe, and didnt good rates..saved us from constantly bargaining prices with tuk tuk drivers!

What sort of prices did TOM charge? Can you give a couple of examples?

Thanks

sorry correction on my last post ';and didnt good rates'; .. he DID give good rates

Hi SLeepy,

Karon to Patong 300 Baht, Karon to Kata 200 Baht , Karon to Kata Noi 250 Baht.

reliable scooter hireshop near Mercure Hotel,Patong.

We will be staying at this hotel 03 april for 7 nights and i need info on a reliable moped hire shop. We need a scooter for 2/3 days to tour around the south of Phuket, we do not intend to use it in patong as we have heard about the busy traffic/crazy drivers.Any info and prices would be appreciated. many thanks, Norny.

reliable scooter hireshop near Mercure Hotel,Patong.

we hired moto%26#39;s from a shop quite near the mecure. It was pricy compared to the beach hawkers, but still affordable. 300 baht for the day and discounted if you hired for longer.

The shop is just past the 7/11 across from the Patong Merlin. So if you walk out of the Mecure, turn right and its no more than 50m down. There is a sign above the shop that says bike hire and laundry.

Just some general feedback regarding the bikes....We were asked to leave our passports, but we arranged to leave a cash deposit instead (3000 baht per moto)

We did not get our deposit back.......our own fault. We had an accident on one of the bikes and it ended up with a few scratches. Probably not enough to warrant the amount they kept, but we were over arguing about it!

Be careful to check the tires, ours were bald and coming around a corner, hit some gravel and skidded out.

cheers

3000 baht was cheap. Imagine if you had slid in front of a car. The bike would have been a write off, and possibly hospitalization for you.

Chances are that you don%26#39;t have a valid bike licence and probably no IDP which is required to drive/ride in Thailand. Without these any travel insurance that you had would have been void.

I think Dragon just posted a report on traffic statistics in Phuket. Pretty scary stuff and all you need to come unstuck is a little gravel on the road.

Play safe guys.

you are right, 3000 is cheap.

poor assumption on the licensing though. But good warning to others looking to hire.

we were riding safely in a quiet area, as I said, bad tyres a tight corner and gravel just don%26#39;t mix!

We never ever would rent bikes, dragonc post was interesting.

300 a day though sounds very expensive, it was my impression that hire rates were about 150 a day most places in Thailand.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I think i%26#39;ll check out Dragons%26#39; statistics first, then consider my options. I have a uk licence but not the international one. thanks for the info. norny.

  • Night River Cruises

Having been to Bangkok on numerous occasions and never having experienced the delights of the much talked about river cruises we decided to go on one this year. I would like some reccomendations for a night cruise with dinner. We are staying at the Novotel Siam Square. Thanks so much.

    Night River Cruises

I am certain that you will enjoy yourselves, it is quite a pleasant experience. I have done two. The first was with the Montien Riverside- I was staying there and they had their own small rice barge. Excellant in all ways, but not cheap

The second I booked via a tour guide I had hired by name of Wandee e mail cin1133@yahoo.com, this too was a first class night out. Good food and entertainment and good value.

It is probable that your Hotel could also arrange one for you. This is certainly a popular night out and many choices availiable, But yes do go a really lovelly way to spend an evening

    Regards

    Dave

Great evening cruise on a converted rice barge:

Here%26#39;s a list of dinner cruise service, each one has different prices. But it ranges between 1500-2500 baht/person.

I have tried the one with Oriental Hotel (thought not staying there) and it was amazing. I did it twice. My parents tried also the one with Marriott Riverside but they liked the one with Oriental most, expecially the pre-cruise coktail.

Visiting late May - early June: Weather Concerns

Hello. I am considering planning my honeymoon and we are thinking of visiting Thailand from May 29th - June 15th.

    We would like to visit:

Bangkok, Chang Mai, and beaches in the south. Our preference is the Andaman Sea side: Krabi, Railay, Lanta and Phuket but we hear the weather may not be ideal.

Is this unrealistic? What should we expect? I have visited Koh Samui and Koh Tao in Late June before and it was totally fine. Should I expect the same?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Visiting late May - early June: Weather Concerns

When you went to Koh Samui and Koh Tao in June weather would normaly be fine, there is a different weather pattern in that area from the Phuket / Krabi / Lanta ara, June is not so bad but certainlyt expect more rainfall. Ferry crossing to islands such as Lanta etc may be affected. Again, noit the worst time but perhaps have a think. If you have felxibility you could perhaps head to the samui side and then see what the weather is like one there.

Visiting late May - early June: Weather Concerns

Gulf and Andaman side islands are affected by different weather patterns. Certainly the Gulf side will have better weather during your timeframe.

We have some pics and stories of our trip to Koh Phangan and koh Tao during June here... www.bobandjanette.com which may help.

    Happy %26amp; safe travels

Check this out for weather details - -

Krabi etc is liable to be wetter than the Gulf.

Thank you. This is all very helpful!

  • Honeymoon Advice Late April- mid May

We%26#39;re using Hong Kong as the base for our honeymoon in late April/early May, and are thinking about spending 3-5 nights in Hong Kong, and 8-10 nights somewhere else in SE Asia.

Any thoughts/advice/travel agent recommendations for a trip from Hong Kong?

Right now, we%26#39;re considering Malaysia, Thailand (east coast given the season), Vietnam or Lombok - main goals are a beautiful beach with swimming, access to good snorkeling, access to wildlife as well would be ideal. Luxury accommodations may be doable, given that it%26#39;s for our honeymoon, but it does depend on how much airfare and other activities will be.

    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!!!

Gem Scam, Dinner Scam.. In the same day!

It started as a nice day and a trip to the grand Palace. After my family completed sightseeing at the grand palace we decided to walk to Wat Pho(The Reclining Buddha)..

On our way there, a tuk tuk driver attempted to stop us claiming that wat pho was closed but we ignored the driver and proceeded onwards. A few minutes later, we stumbled upon a Tourist Police. He too claimed that Wat Pho was closed for some royal ceremony.. We trusted him since he was a ';police officer'; even showing us his authority card!

Then, he suggested for us to go to the ';Lucky Buddha Temple'; and even got us a tuk tuk at a %26#39;discounted price%26#39;. He said that the ';lucky temple'; was for the royal families only and we were lucky today because it was only open to the public for today..

    When we arrived, we were greeted by a ';surprised'; ';caretaker'; for the temple. He claimed to be a royal architect and was in charge of the temple. He too repeated the tourist police%26#39;s story and even offered a %26#39;free guided tour%26#39; around the temple. By the way, he kept repeating that we were ';very luck today';(at least 20 times =D). He also told us about the various gems decorating the buddha statues especially sapphires, rubies and diamonds claiming to: ';Bring Happy, Lucky, Long life';

At the end of the tour, he asked us who reccomended us to come here.. He then suggested to go to the ';Royal'; Lapidary Factory which is meant for royalties only but it was opened to the public today with huge discounts because it was their 30th anniversary. Then he got us a ';discounted'; cab ride to the lapidary.

The lapidary was truly a touristy destination with free drinks and even an orientation video. We sensed something wrong and refused to purchase anything..

Later, we took a taxi back to the pier so we could take a boat back to the city.. The driver insisted to take us for a ';motor boat ride along the khlong';. When we refused, he took a much longer route and dropped us at an isolated place. Luckily we managed to find our way out through the back alleys to the pier.

We took a boat and got off at pier 5 to go to Yaowarat(chinatown). After visiting chinatown, we wanted to go to Hua Lamphong to ride an MRT back to the hotel.. We met a smartly dressed man who spoke good english claiming to be the owner of a nearby shop..

He chatted with us for a few minutes before reccomending us to go for a ';fresh seafood dinner'; at SomboonDee Seafood Market. He called over a waiting tuk tuk to pick us and ';negotiated'; for a cheap fare.

The driver happily brought us to a place near a railway line. Address: Phayathai Rd, Rajthavi.. When we entered the restaurant, we were brought straight to the seafood selection without any menu and we felt pressured to select. We only picked 2 seafood items(1 fish, 4 prawns) and a vegetable dish.

The bill for 4 of us was 4200 baht! With this price, we could have gotten a live seafood feast back home!

For those going to Thailand, remember:

    - Never talk to smartly dressed guys speaking good english who approach you

    - Dont walk with a map in hand(we were only mobbed when we stopped to look at the map)

    - Dont trust anyone who approaches. Even the tourist police

-Dont trust the tuk tuks and taxi drivers(better to pay more for the MRT or skytrain)

    - The temples are never closed!

Gem Scam, Dinner Scam.. In the same day!

    Hi Woody...

I had to laugh out loud reading your post,I just came back from Thailand and had some of the same experiences you did. I even had read endless warnings on trip advisor beforehand. My advice is the same:

Don%26#39;t talk to any ';friendly'; person you approaches you. We got approached 6 times by ';friendly'; people offering to help us get to the Grand Palace. They all spoke great English and when they asked where we were from they all seemed to know something about the city or country we came from. That of course made for more conversation..

We were stopped out front of a police station by a nice ';friendly'; person who told us he worked inside the police station. We initially believed him.

We were told by all of these ';friendly'; people that, that day was ';Buddha Day'; and all of the temples were free but didn%26#39;t open until later in the day. BUT if we wanted we could get on a tuk tuk and he would drive us to a few places beforehand and then we could head over to the temples later. We of course refused and proceeded to the Grand Palace.

We put our map away after that.

Even out front of the Grand Palace people were trying tell us that it was only Thai people allowed in and we%26#39;d have to come back later and then they tried to direct us to a tuk tuk. Again we marched past them and into the Grand Palace, which of course was opened.

I didn%26#39;t have any gem scam experiences. Just a few taxi rip offs (I stayed away from the tuks) but that was it. Like I said earlier, I read these warnings consistently through the trip advisor posts but somehow almost believed a nice, warm, smiling, friendly stranger on the street. After that day I didn%26#39;t indulge in any conversations with anyone on the streets and I had no problems.

Gem Scam, Dinner Scam.. In the same day!

Sorry to see that you got scammed. It happens to most 1st timers, eventhough most will never admit it and some are not even aware of it.

The restaurant one happens alot, even to local Thais. The SomBoon Seafood restaurant is a rather famous restaurant in BKK. So famous that there are now copy restaurants with almost the same name. So the scam is the taxis and tuk tuks take guest, farang + thai, to these fake Somboons, the drivers get a commission and the restaurant your business.

Check out the SomBoon seafood website, they even have a scam warning on their home page.

Remember, if the menu have no prices, walk out.

Good advise that should be brought up periodically to warn the 1st timers.

We got the ';cheap'; tuktuk ride too, but realized what was happening and ignored the nice speaking folks at the other end and just carried on in our ';new'; location. The 4 of us had to huddle together though to get away from these jerks and entered a mall that they told us was closed for a royal holiday.

Why does anyone use tuk-tuks. Apart from scammers, tuktuk are dangerous, uncomfortable and often more expensive than an airconditioned taxi. Never believe anyone not wearing a uniform claiming to be a cop. Thai police uniforms are brown, and most cops wear a kind of helmet, like a mototcycle helmet.

Yes maybe this forum should have a health warning attached in the same way that cigarette packets do - and it would save a lot of repeat postings. It should go along the lines of:

1 anyone who approaches you at the airport offering you a taxi or limo is a spiv and crook and will rip you off. to get a taxi go outside to the public taxi booth - you have to find this youself.

2 if approached on the street by friendly english speaking people tell them firmly to go away - they too are likely to be crooks and scammers (would you believe a stranger who approached you on the street in your home town?)

3 following on from 2 assume anyone who approaches you near to a tourist site ( grand palace, jim thomsons house etc ) and tells you it is closed is a liar and crook.

4 anyone who tells you that you are lucky and can access a special sale of gems/diamonds is a crook/con artist

5 any tuk tuk/taxi driver who offers you a special deal is on a commission to take you somewhere to get ripped off

6 any deal that seems too good to be true....is exactly that

7 a tuk tuk driver will always rip you off

8 if you get in a taxi and the driver doesn%26#39;t switch on the meter then get out and walk away

9 don%26#39;t go into an upstairs bar in patpong

10 don%26#39;t give money to street begars - they are organised professionals

Yes i dont know why people use tuk tuks ?

Noisy, hot. loud. dangerous, cost too much etc. When aircon cabs, quite, safe and cheaper are everywhere ???????????

And i think the Palace IS ONLY CLOSED on the king birthday !

I can%26#39;t help but laugh out loud either because this did happen to me too! but I didnt know about tripadvisor before then..

I think I went to the same temple too.. was it a small temple in the middle of no where and with no tourists? I knew I was getting scammed when I saw no other tourist around. I was SO freaked out.. Luckily my Boyfriend was with me..and that smartly dressed guy was there and spoke VERY good english telling us he%26#39;d been to Sydney and saw the Opera house... hahaha..

I too went to some Gem shop and the tuk tuk driver said he would get free petrol for taking us there.. he even had a ';free gasoline'; card in the photo part of his wallet! didn%26#39;t really click to me till later..

But overall a funny experience and we laugh when we look back at it. I guess you always learn from your mistakes and come out wiser!

and another tip I might add.. Don%26#39;t point and go ummm.. I think its this way.. thats another give away that you have no idea where your going.. at least pretend too! =)

    Hi

On the occasions i have used a tuk tuk I always pretend Im in a hurry, I tell the driver where i want to go then completely ignore him, its not nice i know but it always works for me.

    Manicus.

We had the opposite actually in Bangkok. Arrived off the bus from Kanchanaburi wanting to find a taxi to our hotel. The taxi drivers asked us for 200 baht to take us for a 10 minute ride. Given we had just paid 300 baht for a 2 1/2 hour ride this was rediculous.

Not one was interested. Even at the hotel we walked into again not interested. It turned out it was ';peak hour'; and they couldn%26#39;t be bothered.

So in the end we took a tuk tuk for 200 as the taxi%26#39;s had given up by then.

What a ride lol. me in the back surrounded by luggage with my feet hanging out the side. I was bouncing around with the luggage LMAO, what a site.

Actually it was a highlight of the trip. Life is an adventure!

    Wen

    Hi,

Sorry to hear that you got scammed. It saddens me that these sort of things happen to travellers. Not so much because of financial loss but we will be on our guard, which is fine. However, in doing so, we are not open to meeting/conversing with the truly nice and kind native people. I have struggled with this issue for a long time. In the end, I choose to be safe than sorry.

You might not receive sympathy from some travellers as they have this ridiculous ';you should have known'; attitude. One can read all the guidebooks%26#39; warnings and TA posts they want- a bad experience, such as yours, will bring the traveller to higher level of vigilant next time around.

The one advice ( I got this one from this forum) that I always keep in mind: never go to a place that you did not plan going/visiting.

I hope your future trips will be scam free! Thanks for posting.

    Samui - Phangan - Tao??

Hi we (hubby %26amp; me) have 3 weeks in Thailand in July/August. So far we have almost decided on:

    Day 1 - 3 Bangkok

    Days 3 - 6 Kanchanburi

Day 7 - Flight Bkk to Samui

    Days 7 - 20 ?????????

Day 20 - Flight Samui to BKK

    Day 21 - home

So we have nearly 2 weeks to fill up in the middle and dozens on questions! We are both early 40s and like snorkelling, hiking, relaxing %26amp; experiencing local culture. We don%26#39;t want 5 star resorts just a nice beach, sea we can swim in and simple beach accommodation. My other half wants to see Samui (on the recommendation of a friend) but I am concerned that it will be too commercialised in some places. I am quite keen on going to Thong Nai Pan beach in Phangan as it looks and sounds great. Originally I wanted to go to all three islands - as I couldn%26#39;t choose one:) but I have realised that we would use up valuable holiday time by travelling too much, so I thought we could just do 2. So does anyone have any recomendations - which island/s? How long to see each one, where to stay on Samui? Also I read that there is a ferry direct to Thong Nai Pan beach from Samui, does anyone know how often, where from and how to book this?

Sorry for such a long post but this is our first time to Thailand and I am VERY excited! : )

    Samui - Phangan - Tao??

Hi Bryony! Having been to Samui + Phangan you could defintely do all 3 of the islands you mentioned in a fortnight. Samui is very commercialised compared to the other 2 islands but we really enjoyed the buzz and nightlife. We stayed on chaweng beach, we are only 25. The recommendation for many from this site for your age group seems to be Fishermans village in the north of Samui. We visited it and it was very nice but too quiet for us honeymooners we liked the wide range of restaurant choices and pubs in chaweng. It is only around 15 minutes from Chaweng in a songthaew (like a taxibus, semi-open with benches, people hop on and hop off). So if you wanted to go into Chaweng for a night out you could no problem.

Fishermans village has views over to Ko Phangan, which is only a 30-45minute ferry ride away. I%26#39;m not sure about the ferry to Thong Nai Pan, but if you get the standard ferry which is very cheap (approx 拢5 return I think), you can then get a songthaew to your chosen beach. Will be a bumpy 30-40 minute ride but it%26#39;s fun! Phangan is not nearly as developed as Samui but there are a lot of signs that it will head that way in the next number of years.

As for Ko Tao I haven%26#39;t been, but I know it is to the North West of Phangan with daily ferrys also and again not fair in terms of journey time. I would recommend for you...

    7-11th Samui (3nights)

    11th - 15th Phangan (3nights)

15-18 Tao (3nights) BEST PLACE TO SNORKLE

    18-20 Back to Samui (2nights)

You can get ferry to Samui from Tao. Just an idea I%26#39;m very jealous I%26#39;d love to go back again!!!

    Samui - Phangan - Tao??

Hi BazDown. Thanks for your advice. What time of year did you go, I%26#39;ve been reading about the low tides and the fact that you can%26#39;t swim off some beaches at certain times of year. What%26#39;s the beach like at Fishermans village?

I seem to have been researching this trip for months but I am still confused! I think the problem is that 3 weeks is just NOT long enough : )

We were there in October. Fishermans village beach seemed fine. Not clear sand more of a grainy pebbly sand if you know what I mean, but definitely still ok to walk on! Sand on chaweng beach is beautiful, especially in central to southern end! In north chaweng there is a reef around 60 metres out which can make it shallow, but you can still walk 5-10 mins down the beach to find a better spot! Tyr not to worry too much I did before we went and we loved it just go with the flow, don%26#39;t obsess about decisions I%26#39;m sure no matter where you go on Samui or Phangan you will have a great time:)!

Sorry Bryony just to add...if beach is really important to you I would without a doubt go to SOuth Chaweng! The most beautiful beach on the island easily. You are out of the busiest part of the hustle + bustle (which we loved) of chaweng. But plenty of good bars and restaurants within the vicinity to have a great time:)! It might be nice to have a bit of a livelier time in Samui as Phangan and Tao are very quiet!

Ok I%26#39;ll have a look at it. I must admit I haven%26#39;t even consided Chaweng - reading about it makes it sound like the Blackpool of Thailand!

Have a look at Maenam beach.Lots of good beach accomodation.Swimmable most of the year.Handy for the ferry or catamaran to Phangan.

Been to Samui 4 times noe - love Maenam - for the older traveller it has it all - great beach - deep (although not clear) water for swimming - beach bars and restaurants and no hawkers

Chaweng is great beach but hawkers all day every day trying to sell stuff - does my head in

Chong mong (sorry for spelling) is my fav place - near Big Budda - not commercialised and great beach restaurants

    Hi

We are both 40 and have been to Thailand a number of times. We were in Samui, Phangan and Koa Toa last year and we are going back there this year in August as well.

Samui is good for a bit of life and although commercialised, still has a great buzz. I would personally recommend the south beach in Chaweng. The beach is beautiful and away from the crowds. The hotels here are a 10 minute walk from the main drag, but you can jump on one of the local pick-ups for 30 baht a person. 10 minutes might sound like it%26#39;s an easy walk, but in the heat and humidity it gets a bit warm! There are quieter resorts, but we like a bit of life. We stopped at the First House hotel, which in fine and includes buffet breakfast. Bang Por beach is really quiet, but not great for swimming (although it is idyllic).

In Koh Phangan we stopped at Salad Hut on Salad Beach which really is fantastic. There is more basic (and more exclusive) hotels on the beach, but this place was great value and really chilled out with friendly staff. It%26#39;s a very small resort and chilling is the main attraction. Snorkelling is good if the tide is in and you can get over the coral reef. It%26#39;s meant to be better snorkelling round the corner in Koh Ma, but we didn%26#39;t make it there as it was just great to do nothing much for a few days. We are going back this year, but are also doing Thong Nai Pan beach. I agree it looks great!

We stopped at Sensi Paradise in Koh Toa and loved the island. The snorkelling is amazing and the island of Nang Yuan just off Koh Toa is a must see. Get a long tail boat as soon as you are allowed on the island (limited for daytrippers)and miss most of the day trippers from Samui and Phangan. The hotel is a bit expensive but we really liked it and it%26#39;s a once a year thing, so hey, what the heck.

You can do all 3 islands easily as it%26#39;s only 30 mins to Phangan and 1 and a half hours to Koh Toa. I would definitely do all 3 as they all had something different to offer.

The accomodation we stopped at above was mid range i.e not backpacker digs nor five star.

Hi thanks for your advice. All three do sound great so I think we%26#39;ll have to try and see all of them, unless we get %26#39;stuck%26#39; somewhere that we can%26#39;t bear to leave! We are hoping to just turn up on the islands and then find somewhere to stay, does anyone know how easy this will be in July/August?

Hi Bryony don%26#39;t think that will be too much of a problem, supposedly Thailand is a lot quieter so far this year and that%26#39;s expected to continue. There are so many hotels on Samui + Phangan you will definitely find somewhere to stay, you just may not get your 1st choice one if it%26#39;s particularly popular. Still very jealous hope you have an amazing time:)!

  • River Kwai

Would like to do this tour and wondering whether to include Hellfire Pass as I believe it is a distance further. Would this be to long a day from Bangkok?

If anyone has ideas would appreciate. Thanks

    River Kwai

kasha85, google tour with tong click on itineraries and look at Kanchanaburi,we have booked K4 for april

    River Kwai

Hellfire Pass is a must do tour in my opinion and can be done by yourself or as a tour..

If you chose to do it yourself, when you arrive at the Kanchanaburi bus station there will be plenty of taxis to take you the short ride into town. We walked the distance as there are war cemeteries along the way worthy of stopping by.

We did our own tour and it was easy to arrange.

Bus from BKK to Kanchanaburi (2hrs) and spend the day looking around town, take in the Tiger Temple if you wish. Great town, lots of museums and floating restaurants etc.

Next morning (assuming a week day) catch the first train to Nam Tok (end of the line). This train is designated as the school run and therefore cheaper rates. The rest of the trains are designated as tourist trains and run at an inflated price.

From Nam Tok there will be songthews waiting to drive you the last 16klms to Hellfire Pass. Make sure you take 500baht and your passports for the free loan of the audio headsets at the museum. It really adds to the experience being able to listen to the Diggers as you walk the line. The museum is free entry but please leave a donation. It is one of the best museums that I have visited.

Return is via the same method. The last train leaves Nam Tok about 4pm and once again it is the school run. Very scenic trip along the banks of the River Kwaii and crosses ';the'; wooden bridge.

We have some pics, stories and maps of our trip here... www.bobandjanette.com

    Happy %26amp; safe travels

Sorry, forgot to add that you can do the Hellfire tour as a day trip via an organised tour in a mini van.

I would suggest though that if tou have the time to spend at least one overnight in Kanchanaburi. It is a lovely town set on the banks of the River Kwaii.

Koh lanta best beaches and bunglows

Help Ive never been to Koh Lanta and want to know the best beaches and bungalows. We are travelling on a budget so nice, clean and cheap will do. We plan to travel in April and will be coming via Phuket.

Koh lanta best beaches and bunglows

    Hi-

I was just on Koh Lanta last week and stayed on the southern part of the island on mai pai beach at a great place called Bamboo Bay Beach Resort. There are several budget places with bamboo huts or cabins down on that end, the beaches are beautiful (Ao Nui, Jaak, and Mai Pai), and it%26#39;s very relaxed and peaceful.

When you get to the port of Lanta, you can take a taxi to the southern end. It takes about 40 minutes by car and costs between 200-500 bhat, but it%26#39;s worth it!

Koh lanta best beaches and bunglows

From Phuket you can either travel to Koh Lanta by ferry, via Phi Phi island or road trip via Krabi and then car ferry. Either way is scenic or you could perhaps travel one way via ferries and return via road.

We have some pics, stories and maps of our trip to Koh Lanta from Phuket here... www.bobandjanette.com which may help. We travelled by ferries going to Lanta and returned by road stopping at Krabi for a few days to break the trip up a little.

    Happy %26amp; safe travels

  • Travel from Ko Tao to BKK in one day to catch flight to US

    Hi,

I%26#39;m trying to plan departure from Ko Tao and am wondering if the following is advised.

Leave Ko Tao on first ferry at 9:30AM

    Arrive Ko Samui 11:20AM

    Travel to airport 30 min

Flight to BKK leaves at 1:45PM

    Arrive BKK 2:50PM

Leave BKK for flight to US at 5:05PM

I am on a carrier that I can check luggage through in Ko Samui and do clear customs there and do the CIQ thing in Bangkok. Does this itinerary leave enough time to transfer from the ferry to Ko Samui airport and go through customs and to transfer in Bangkok from domestic to international?

    Thanks for any help!

Travel from Ko Tao to BKK in one day to catch flight to US

If everything runs to time then you will have no problems. The weakest link is the ferry.I would be inclined to travel to Samui the day before.

Travel from Ko Tao to BKK in one day to catch flight to US

Two weeks ago I had the first boat from Koh Tao to Koh Samui (Lompraya catamaran) and it was one and a half hour delayed. If this would happen to you as well, you would miss your flight.

I wouldn%26#39;t trust the ferry running on time. You have given yourself enough time it seems to get to the airport but that depends where the ferry drops you off. I got on the ferry near the big golden buddah and ended up getting dropped off on the other side of the island and it took along time on the boat and to get back to my hotel (but great scenery through towns). I was in no rush though and i had transfers (that came with the ferry ticket that we bought at reception of hotel)who knew where to meet us. so we had no dramas but i agree you should do it all a day earlier. but then i take my time on holidays.

Do the flights from Samui go to the international airport in BKK or domestic?

just wondering because we flew into samui from Phuket domestic side and trained back to BKK last time.

I just presumed they flew into the old airport from Samui.

If so check in at international is no later than 2 hours before boarding because of luggage screening measures so you are going to be well tight on that leg, unless flying first class or they keep check in open longer for your flight.

Remember you may land at 2.50 but you are not off the plane at that time!

Then you have to get to international and check in less than 2 hours before takeoff.

I would be going back to Bangkok the day before not Samui.

All flights go into Suvanabhumi, the international airport.

Want to know where Pierre's Boutique is???

Can anyone tell me where the tailors of Pierre%26#39;s Boutique that where situated on Silom Road, near the Holiday Inn are now located....i have used these tailors for the past 2 years and was hoping to do so again but was dismayed to find were no longer there.??

  • Need help on my Itinerary first solo trip

    Hi Guys

This is my first solo (female) trip - I am all excited but as well as apprehensive. I chose Thailand as the destination to start solo travelling as I have been reading that is safe for a single women to travel around the country...that is true right?(still pepping myself up that I can do it!)

Here is my rough plan of action for a weeks trip - have omitted South (Phuket etc) as it doesn%26#39;t seem fit into my current available time %26amp; budget.

Would appreciate ANY help on this - I am especially looking for info around whether I am allocating too much/little time for the activities eg. would temples/markets in Chiang Mai take a day?

Its do-able but bear in mind heat and traffic, so things will take a little longer than you expect. Day 1 - the Grand palace stops admissions at 3.30pm so your time will be very limited. Best time is mornings 8.30am-9am.

Day 2 - The floating market is way out of town and best done on a tour. The weekend market (Saturday %26amp; Sunday only) is a must do but it is huge and you will get very hot - but I guess you%26#39; have no problem sleeping on the train after that :))

    where to stay with rugrats

Hi we have have a weeks stopover in Bangkok and thought we would try to go to koh chang. We have been to thailand before back in our old back packing days many moons ago but this time will be travelling with 2 kids aged 6 and 8. Therefore we need to go a little more upmarket and would like to prebook as it will be over newyear 2009/2010. Koh chang appeals as it gives the kids a chance to see the elephants as well as lots of fun on the beach.

I have been looking on this forum and the web and have got myself very confused. Where would you recommend us to stay. We would like somewhere with a pool, nice beach, quiet but in walking distance to a few restaurants in the evening. We would also prefer accomodation that is seperate bungalows rather than a hotel block. Funky Hut resort looks lovely and has great reviews but is it too far removed from everything as it is on the otherside of the island and is the beach nice there?. Would it cost alot to travel to the otherside if we wanted a change of scene?

I look foward to recieving your suggestions.

    where to stay with rugrats

Funky Hut is worth considering over New Year as they wont hammer you for compulsory gala dinners. Plus they get a lot of families there and you can take all the usual trips and tours if you are staying there. But it%26#39;s not ideal, the beach is OK but not great. If you want a long stretch of beach or to be within walking distance of a variety of places to eat %26amp; drink. So maybe split your time between Funky Hut and somewhere on the west coast.

Have a look at the resorts in Kai Bae, quite a few nice bungalow resorts there. KB Resort is the best of the bunch on the beach. Garden Resort gets good reviews but is a couple of minutes walk from the sea.

    where to stay with rugrats

I agree to what Ian says. You can check the resorts on Klong Prao Beach as well, although the all have compulsory dinners on Xmas and New Year. Can be quite costly.

KB Resort Kai Bae might be ideal but it is very unlikely that you can book a bungalow or 2 for that period of time. They do have rooms with 2 king size beds, quite spacious, but as far as I know they are already booked until 2014 :-(

I like Funky Hut, just be aware, its far from just everything. The management and the kitchen are great though. The beach will be within walking distance :-)

Remember, this thread will be open for all your questions.

Thankyou for your advice. Discussing Funky hut further

    - is there any other restaurants/cafes within walking distance at all?

-how much would it cost to take a taxi to the other side for a change of scene?

-on the map it appears to be quite close to the ferry teminal - is this so and can you see it from Funky hut?

    Cheers

You can see the ferries from Funky Hut but not the small pier/dock on Koh Chang, that%26#39;s around the corner, about 1km north.

There are a couple of other small resorts nearby both with restaurants by the beach.

The pick up truck taxis dont head past Funky Hut so the simplest thing to do would be to get the owners to give you a loft to the ferry pier and then take one from there. But make sure you time it to coincide with the ferry arriving, otherwise you%26#39;ll be waiting an hour. From the pier pay about 50 baht/persopn to get to White Sand beach. On the way back, pay the driver a little extra to drop you off at FH.

Hello to St Albans, my old place of work, from Koh Chang. The lower priced resorts at Chai Chet - the Chai Chet Resort, the Royal Coconut (no pool), and the Coconut Beach could suit. No compulsory gala dinners here, in the past.

Group of 8+ friends, need resort in Phuket for December 2009

Help! We%26#39;re a group of friends meeting from across the world for a reunion mid December to Jan 2nd 2010.

What area on Phuket would you recommend?

    What resort would you recommend?

We%26#39;re 25-35 and looking for a place near some night life, but also where we can take day trips from, very importantly it must be right on the beach! Price is a consideration so where can we get great value for money?

    Thanks!

Group of 8+ friends, need resort in Phuket for December 2009

For 8 people, looking for nightlife and beach Patong is a good choice.

Not much in terms of ';right on the beach'; but certainely across the road from it.

Impiana Phuket Cababna is right on the beach, near Bangla Rd (a popular night spot) and plenty of retaurants. It is pricy though.

I recently stayed at Patong Merlin with a group of 6, and it caters well for larger groups. It is across the road from the beach, great pools, near travel vendors (never purchase day trips from the hotel.....so much cheaper elsewhere) markets out the back with fun bars, a supermarket next door and 5 mins walk to Bangla Rd.

Group of 8+ friends, need resort in Phuket for December 2009

Check out ';sunset beach resort'; kalim about 1km outside patong, the best 3 star hotel I%26#39;ve stayed at anywhere.Motorbike taxis always outside.

Walkin should get you a good rate, however Koh Phangan can get max%26#39;d out during full moon parties so it would be wise to check your travel dates. Some places have a minimum stay during FMPs.

We have some pics and stories of our trip here... www.bobandjanette.com which may help.

I%26#39;d like to jump in on the bandwagon here. We are going to Koh Phangan on 31 May and are staying for 10 nights. The FMP is on 9 June but we are staying on the other side of the island. I was also thinking of doing the turn up and see trick but would like advice as to whether this is risky considering the FMP is near the end of our stay.

What a great web site. Have question? Phuket Graceland

Im still working out how to use this site but Im getting there.Tomorrow we are booking into the Phuket Graceland Resort. Now my question is what is the best wing to book into and is it better to request pool access delux room or delux with balcony with sea or pool views. What a great web site. Have question? Phuket Graceland

I agree, do go for pool view rooms or sea view if you can manage it.

    Hi Deb,

Just got back from Phuket %26amp; Ko Samui a few days ago. We stayed for our 3rd time at Gracelands - We always stay in block 5 which is the block closest to the beach and the furthest from reception. On the 3 occassions we have got a deluxe poolside room, so you just step out of your balcony and up to the pool. We stayed in Room 2515 (18/2 - 23/2) and the bed was really comfy. Block 9 is exactly opposite block 5 with the massive pool in between.

It is much nicer having a poolside room, as you can just hop into your room and grab a drink, go to the loo etc. and not have to lock up.

If you want me to send a plan of the resort to you with specific room numbers, pm me with your address.

    Cheers,

    Sandy

Beware! Beware! Time Share Salesmen Patong/Phuket

I did not think i would be so easily caught but on walking down the main Bangla Street, 2 french boys approached us with a free scratch card and then preceeded to do cartwheels down the street telling us we have won a free cruise, laptop or video camera.

Their seeming honesty affected us, so we agreed to go to a 90 minute presentation so we could collect our prize. That was 11.15 in the morning, we staggered out at 15.00 worn out and battered by a prolonged sales presentation from the %26#39;Absolute%26#39; company when the final price only became apparent in the last 5 minutes.

I have no doubt that everyone invovled was on the right side of legal, but we certainly feel misled and our day was put to loss.

And the Laptop, cruise or Video Camera? Not a bit of it! A feww weeks accommodation, again so bound up with strings that i doubt it could be used.

So beware and believe me when i say they are VERY convincing.

Beware! Beware! Time Share Salesmen Patong/Phuket

Thank you so much for sharing with us.

Definitely help us to be aware of this scam.

Beware! Beware! Time Share Salesmen Patong/Phuket

French? Its normally the Brits who do this.

Anyway next time ask to see their work permits. I can guarantee they will run a mile.

I think the heading ';Beware beware time share salesmen patong/phuket'; could equally be applied to the whole world!

Sorry to hear you wasted a day of your holiday due to these creatures but I gotta admit I didn%26#39;t think there was anyone out there who still fell for this load of rot.

Yes very convincing but as a previous poster mentioned TIME SHARE should be the alarm that rings world wide.

Having said that we sat through a 90 minute presentation to get a free weeks accommodation that we couldn%26#39;t use.

Good to hear I am not the only one that got caught

I agree with Rufuscat, that will make the disappear and fast !

Time share salesmen run their games lots of places in the world.

In Pattaya they use young ladies, on Pattaya 2nd Road and Beach Road, under the pretext of some sort of survey plus free dinner/pig roast get together, etc. They sometimes take you out in the sticks and throw a pitch at you. I just tell them they are too late and just recently bought a condo and then move on! They never tell you it is a condo pitch until you get to the banquet.

How and why would anyone fall for a timeshare sales pitch..??!! Haven%26#39;t people learned by now that they are a LOUSY investment?!!!!

Anyone duped into a sales pitch or even buying into a timeshare probably deserves it..

ohhh wow that was a bit harsh

My hubby and I got caught on our honeymoon as no one warned us about this type of thing. Many Aussies have never heard of time share this is just something that is not done in Australia

I think most people , at one time or another, have fallen in some way for us.. we did it deliberately.. it was raining and we were bored.. what can I say! filled in a day.

    Don't insult the Royal Family

You need to be VERY careful here. I remember once buying some chicken at a cart and jokingly waved the money in the flames. The look I got from the Thais I thought I was going to get lynched. Never did that again! I also once had an argument with a Thai and threw money on the ground...something else I won%26#39;t do again!

    Look at the mess Aussie writer Harry Nicolaides is in right now%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;HARRY Nicolaides, the Melbourne writer arrested on a charge of insulting Thailand%26#39;s royal family, has described his appalling prison conditions and his fear of contracting tuberculosis, and pleaded to be allowed to apologise.

';I want to immediately apologise to the royal family for my reckless choice of words,'; Nicolaides told The Weekend Australian at Bangkok Remand Prison.

    ';I want to write a comprehensive letter apologising with the greatest humility to the Thai people for the way the Thai press presented what was written in the book.';

Nicolaides is distressed by his conditions of imprisonment, which could extend for 84 days before he can be released on remand. Bail of 500,000 baht ($17,820) raised by his girlfriend and her friends has been refused.

He fears he has been deliberately isolated as the only farang (foreigner) in a prison cell crammed with 60 or more Thais.

Nicolaides said he entered the prison on Monday a healthy man, although almost suicidal over the threat of 15 years%26#39; jail, but he now had swollen lymph glands, chest pains, constipation and stomach cramps and could not eat.

Almost all the other inmates in his cell were coughing and wheezing, he said. ';There is a rumour going around that some of them will be transferred to the tuberculosis ward (of the prison hospital), which is terribly overcrowded,'; he said.

He feared his condition was deteriorating so quickly he would be vulnerable to tuberculosis infection.

Nicolaides was arrested at Bangkok%26#39;s international airport as he tried to fly home to Melbourne on Sunday night, and held on a warrant charging lese majeste, or offences against the crown, a crime he did not know existed.

The charge was provoked by a passage in his 2003 novel Verisimilitude: is the truth the truth.

';I wrote that from King Rama, and I didn%26#39;t say which King Rama, to the Crown Prince, Thai men are well-known for having multiple wives and concubines for entertainment,'; he said.

Nicolaides said the passage was in the form of ';an omniscient narrator passing a rumour to the protagonist ... it%26#39;s a work of imaginative fiction';.

He acknowledges the passage, from a period of his life when some of his writing was ';flaky';, offended Thai culture and tradition. ';But I%26#39;m not that person now,'; he said.

    He had returned to Thailand seven months ago, mainly to spend time with his girlfriend, who teaches at Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai, where he previously taught.%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;

    Don't insult the Royal Family

Most people who have traveled more than just a bit, know to keep their opinions of local culture - wherever they are - and politics, and royal families - etc etc etc, to themselves.

Even if asked by someone who is obviously seeking a negative opinion, all you need to say is, ';Sorry, I just don%26#39;t know enough about it';.

Or as I once has to tell a very rude and persistent foreigner at a restaurant, ';My mother taught me to never talk politics or religion at dinner';.

Really, no one who is reasonably polite or socially erudite need worry about these issues.

    Don't insult the Royal Family

Until Thailand gets rid of these bizarre and arbitrary l猫se majest茅 laws, it has no hopes of ever becoming a true democracy.

Imagine throwing a man into a jail with common criminals because of something he wrote in a novel 5 years ago!

Sorry, no ';edit'; function here - I meant to say, ';HAD TO TELL'; in the previous post.

Agree that the law may be rather anachronistic, BUT it exists so it%26#39;s essential that we all watch what we say/do. Anyone who researches Thai customs/sensitivities even a little bit will soon realise that negative comments about the Royal family are a no-no, so I do think this guy was a little naive in writing such things then expecting to be given free rein to visit Thailand.

Interestingly, Thais aren%26#39;t similarly gagged when it comes to criticising politicians, thank goodness, or they%26#39;d never have any chance of getting rid of corruption and their version of %26#39;democracy%26#39;.

These kind of laws exist in every monarchy, but aren%26#39;t that strictly enforced. It doesn%26#39;t make a country less democratic even if they are enforced.

Try writing something about the islam which isn%26#39;t in line with their religion, you really have to start watching your back.

This man lived in Thailand for many years and would have been well aware of the law. He repeated the remarks on a website recently, along with other comments (%26#39;ve seen them and they are highly derogatory). What ever foreigners may think of our laws, they are there to be obeyed. He was not forced to live here, he made the choice, and he chose to insult the monarchy.

You should respect the laws and rules of the country you are visiting but some things are ridiculous.

If you don%26#39;t mean to offend but do by mistake then it is a mistake and life gos on. No need for it to be a major issue.

You can not insult the royal family, the Thai people love them and so they should but if done in ignorance let it go.

I read a quote from Bumibol in which he said he didn%26#39;t like the fact that people weren%26#39;t allowed to say anything bad about him - he doesn%26#39;t want to be idolised by force. He said he%26#39;d pardon anyone arrested for the crime.

I wonder if this is true.

If you%26#39;d read the website that this was recently posted on, you would know that it was not done out of ignorance, he knmew the law every well.

    Ibrik Resort by the River

I am planning a 4 day/3 nights trip to Bangkok to celebrate my fiance%26#39;s 50th birthday. Our first trip to Bangkok and would like to stay in a really special and romantic boutique hotel, preferably on the river.

I love the look of the Ibrik, but am concerned that the location will be an issue. We love to get out and about during the day and early evening (don%26#39;t mind river taxis etc)and I%26#39;m worried that access will be difficult. Has anyone stayed here recently? Was there a problem with transport, particularly during evening hours? Would hate to be stranded coming home!

    Many thanks

    Ibrik Resort by the River

It%26#39;s just hard to find and it%26#39;s your first time in BKK. Its located on the West side of the Chaophraya River. Almost taxi drivers are not familiar with the area but they would know where to %26#39;Wat Rakang%26#39; which is close by to the resort

The famous Patravadi Theatre is next to the resort as well

    www.patravaditheatre.com/index.php鈥?/a>

and if that%26#39;s not enough, The Suatra Riverhouse is just steps away

    http://www.supatrariverhouse.net/

Once you get there, a location will be no more an issue. Ferry boat services are available till late night

    http://www.chaophrayaboat.co.th/

The nearest pier is Wat Rakang pier - for a ferry boat across to Tha Chang pier (The Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew) or walk about 5 mins to Wang Lang pier(aka Siriraj pier coz it%26#39;s located in front of the Siriraj hospital). From there you have options for the Chaophraya express boat(up to Pak-Kred in Nonthaburi or down to Saphan Sathron bridge). There are also ferry boat services toTha Chang pier as well and also to Tha Phrachan pier (Thammasat University and its nearby amulet market)

A huge variety of restaurants and street food stalls are available in that area too. There%26#39;s also a local market down along the small alleys called Wang Lang market

  • Airport Express or MRT/Skytrain or taxi

Arrving next week about 1:00 PM, hotel not sure maybe Siam or Silom, anyway has anyone used the Aiport Express bus service to their hotel? How about getting on at MRT-Phetchaburi to the city, compared to a taxi/bus that could get stuck in traffic?

Airport Express or MRT/Skytrain or taxi

At 1 PM you have the option of the Airport Express Bus leaving directly from the terminal.

    http://www.bangkokairportonline.com/node/55

You also have the cheaper 35 baht city bus that can get you into the city where you can continue your ride to the hotel by meter taxi or even the Skytrain. You have to use the free shuttle to get to the little bus station not far from the main terminal.

    http://www.bangkokairportonline.com/node/56

There is no MRT that leaves from the airport! There is a rapid transit system being built but it is not open just yet.

Bus may take over an hour in traffic to get to the Sukhumvit/Siam area.

Meter taxi is best if time is important. Avoid the touts selling rides in the arrivals hall. Meter taxi is located outside the arrivals hall, near the curb. When there are many flights landing at the same time there may be two meter taxi desks open. Lots of posts on meter taxi from the airport when you use the search function.

Nearest Skytrain stop to Phetchaburi Road is probably at the Asia Hotel. (Ratchathewi stop.)

    http://bangkok.sawadee.com/skytrain.htm

Lots of hotels near the Nana Skytrain stop in all price ranges.

When you take the Airport Express Bus the bus gets you close to your hotel. You would have to walk a bit to get to where your hotel is. I use it a lot when I have flights landing during the day or early evening hours. I like it, slow or not. When I do use it it is when I have a hotel on Sukhumvit Road. No Airport Express Bus after midnight.

    Good luck.

Airport Express or MRT/Skytrain or taxi

The Airport Express at 150 baht per person is not a good deal, when you can have a taxi for door-to-door service for about 350 baht.

Changing to the MRT or the BTS would be a big hassle with luggage and won%26#39;t bring you any gains. The taxis use the freeway and traffic jams are not a big issue.

Just take a metered taxi from the Public Taxi dispatcher outside Arrivals.

Connections to Airport from MRT or Skytrain

Are their any direct connections between these guys?

Connections to Airport from MRT or Skytrain

NOt at this time. The Airport rail link opens 12 August.

Connections to Airport from MRT or Skytrain

    ';The Airport rail link opens 12 August.';

never thought I would see the day!... I don%26#39;t know if this has happened to anyone else but the last few trips I have been finding it more and more difficult finding a taxi to the airport that was willing to use the meter.

But to answer the OPs question it looks like it will connect with the MRT at Petchburi, where there will also be a check in, and the BTS at Payathai. With them quoting travelling time of 15mins express and charging B150 I know what I will be using

There is one connection. Vans run to the airport from Victory Monument for 70 baht. Catch the vans just below the walkway from the BTS station. Watch for the sign ';Victory Point.'; Cheap way to get to the airport if you don%26#39;t have much luggage.

Booking of John Gray Sea Canoe Starlight Trip

I%26#39;ll be going to Phuket in mid-April after getting a not bad air-ticket deal from (SGD10/tic excluding taxes) from TigerAirways. Will be arriving on the first in-bound flight from Singapore and would like to go on the Starlight trip on the same day. (No time wasted!).

Can anybody help advise what would be the best way to make the sea canoe booking in advance. Also, any recommendation for a elephant ride/white river rafting package?

Hotel recommendation in Bangkok Sukhumit area

Can any help with a good boutique hotel in the Sukhumvit area with a good sized swimming pool please. I am in Bangkok from 11th to 16th May and I am changing the hotel I am booked in because of renovations. It%26#39;s unfortunate that I have to change, so if anyone can recommend one it would be appreciated. I was staying at the Bel Aire Princess. Cheers from Remington Park.

Hotel recommendation in Bangkok Sukhumit area

    Hi Remington Park

We have stayed at The Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit quite a few times now.

Beautiful pool area, the pool is for relaxation, no good for lap swimming as it is a free form shape.

You wil be able to see photos on their website.

Hotel also directly connected to Asoke Skytrain and an MRT station which is very convenient for getting around.

    Regards

    Robert

Hotel recommendation in Bangkok Sukhumit area

    Hi Remington

Sorry to change subject slightly but We are booked in the Bel Aire Princess 22nd to 25th March. I am concerned now about what you say about renovations. Do you know the start date of these renovations please.

    Steve

    Hi folks

I have stayed at Bel Aire Princess in the past but would recommend the Dynasy Grande (just off soi 4) as a better alternative,it is quite a lot newer and I found service a little better.I beleive the group also run the Dawin Hotel (soi 4) I havent stayed but have heard some good reports.Let us now where you choose and how it was .Cheers.

Have stayed before at The Landmark Hotel very close to the Bel Aire Princess I can recomend The Landmark very nice pool and good service just across from the Nana station.

Sorry to scare you, but the renovations don%26#39;t start until the 20th April, so you will be fine. It%26#39;s a great hotel and very handy to everything. I suppose I am being a bit fussy, but they will be building an outside staircase between 9.00 and 5.00 and I thought it would be noisy, especially when lying by the pool. I have stayed there everytime I have been in Bangkok, so enjoy yourselves. Cheers.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will look into all the hotels you have recommended. Cheers!

Thanks for your reply, we are looking forward to it now.

hi,the renovation start from Mar 15 till Apr.

My travel agent told me it was from 20th april until end of June. Why would she tell me otherwise. If that was true that they start in March then I wouldn%26#39;t be changing hotels. I trust what she tells me.

This carefully planned holiday just gets better we are booked into Belair Princess 16th to the 20th April. Also been informed by BMI our flight from leeds to Heathrow on the 16th april has been axed.

Restaurants are running out of business?

I was reading some comments that Khao Lak area has been suffering for tourist loss... And due to this lesser amount of visitors, places are closing (like smaller restaurants)? And the ones that stay open, are increasing their prices quite a lot. Is this true?

Any comments is the Mr. Indian still open?

And about what is their price range if they are still open?

Restaurants are running out of business?

There are double number of restaurants this year while the guest is more or less the same number (4,500 rooms in total (4,000 for last year) but less occupancy). None of resetaurant and even hotel will increase their prices.

If you come in the low season or in the beginning of next high season, Khao Lak is very value for you money.

Restaurants are running out of business?

Its a global problem, theres a few closed in Amsterdam, i heard about 30 pubs a day are closing in the UK, lets hope by the end of this year things start to pick up, you get sick of hearing about all this gloom and doom.

    Manicus.

Khaolaker makes a very good point. There will be some very good deals for visitors to Khao Lak. This makes it better value, according to my own calculations, for Europeans to go to Khao Lak than the more usual destinations.

Well it wont if the exchange rates stay as they are, its already more expensive to visit Thailand than it was a year ago, especially with the weak dollar and pound.

    Manicus.

Some of the pricier ';Thai fusion'; type restaurants have closed, some restaurants have increased their prices by about 10 to 20 baht per main course. Lots of new restaurants have opened, particularly in Bang Niang. There is now a Mrs. India as well as Mr. India. All in all an even wider selection of excellent eateries.

Even with the very significant reduction in bahts for 拢s and to a lesser degree 鈧?for bahts, dining out in Khao Lak, especially at local eating places is excellent value for money.

We have just returned from a superb Thai here in Bang Niang, where we splashed out on some house wine, a house seafood speciality main course and another very unusual but excellent beef main and total for 2 was 1020 baht. Most nights dinner costs no more than 500 baht.

Arandora, is this new Mrs. India inBang Niang?

Do you know the location (is it near some hotel/resort, that way it is easier to find)?

But Mr. India is in La On if I remember correct?

    :)

Any idea, what is the price range in mr. India nowadays (I think it more expensive than the thai places)?

Mr.India is on your right as you enter Bang La On, opposite the yellow Khao Lak Grand City building. Mrs.India is on the right, also in Bang La On, just past the Happy Snapper Bar. Both are about the same walking distance from the Nang Thong Supermarket.

There are two Indian restaurants in Bang Niang, one in the fomer Gecko%26#39;s Sports Bar, which is, I believe, Thai owned and not authentic Indian cuisine, and one on the first road to the left off the Beach Road leading down to and nearly opposite the entrance to La Flora. The menu here is extensive, different and superb with the best naan bread we have ever had - melts in your mouth. We took our own bottle of wine and the price for dinner for two was about 1000 baht.

Prices are higher than Thai restaurants, averaging somewhere between a pizzeria and a steakhouse.

Thank you so much once again for the info Arandora :)

    You are a great help!

Isn%26#39;t the Grand City Building where%26#39;s the Monty The Tailor is also located?

Did your dinner price (about 1000b for two) include starters + main dish or only for the two main dishes?

    Yes, same place as Monty%26#39;s.

Our meal included 2 poppadums with 3 dips, 1 onion, 1 spicy mint and 1 delicious tamarind with mango; 1 speciality deep fried cottage cheese appetizer; 2 different curries, 1 vegetable (potato) dish and 2 garlic naan breads.

  • Ko Lanta in May?

    Hi..

We are hoping to travel to Ko Lanta in the 1st week of May.

We do understand that it is the beginning of the low/wet season but we would love some input from anyone who has travelled there around this time last year.

    Thanks

    Ko Lanta in May?

During May some ferry services to Koh Lanta stop running due to rough seas. Obviously this will also affect other beach activities and day speedboat trips etc. What will happen this year only one person knows and unfortunately he doesn%26#39;t frequent TA.

I have visited Krabi several times during May, some trips have been fine, some with afternoon thunderstorms. We have some pics and stories of our trips to Koh Lanta and Krabi areas here... www.bobnadjanette.com which may help.

    Happy %26amp; safe travels

    Ko Lanta in May?

    Thanks

I did forget to specify that we are really interested in the weather and how wet does it get around May in Ko Lanta??

    Hi all,

We are staying at Sala Talay Ao Nang, i%26#39;m wondering what restaurants you recommend? thai food and western.

    Hi Stewie,

We are staying in the Seaview Deluxe for 2500 baht. We just made it into the low season rates which is great otherwise its 4100.

Cannot wait to stay here, although it will be at the end of our trip!

    Izzy

    Hi Izzy,

if you come out of the resort, turn right and walk 200m along the road, you will see A1 restaurant on the right, just after Blue Bayou.

They do great Thai %26amp; Western food there - a regular of mine.

thanks LF we will definitely give it a try.

Converting holiday movies to DVD - Places in Bangkok

Can people recommend some inexpensive but good places in Bangkok whereby I can get my holiday movies taken by camera put on a DVD for viewing on my DVD Player.

I am also seeking a place to have all my holiday snaps printed cheaply but am wanting a good quality place.

    Looking forward to any help.

    Cheers

Converting holiday movies to DVD - Places in Bangkok

I like your thinking Sabrina. I think you are smart because chances are the fee to put your holiday movies on DVD will be cheaper in Bangkok than Australia. Unfortunately I can%26#39;t direct you to any specific place. I would look at Pantip Plaza, take the BTS Station to Ratchathewi and walk towards the closest corner. Stay on that side of the street for 1/2 mile and it will be on your right hand side.

Pantip Plaza is famous for having selection of all matters of electronic goods and services.

If you can%26#39;t find DVD service at Pantip try Pratunam Shopping Center which is 1/2 mile from Pantip Plaza. They may have something. I bought 100 pack of photo quality paper for $15 US at Pantip Plaza. The same item would cost me double in the United States.

    Cheap Eats in Patong

Any suggestions for good cheap eats around Patong, especially Thai and seafood. There are 10 of us in our group and the obvious choices near the beach are pretty pricy ( especially after the prices in other parts of Thailand).

    Cheap Eats in Patong

Sweets and Sabai Sabai are highly recommended. They are close to the beach, but fantastic food and great value.

If you do a search on the forum you will find many good reviews.

They are located on Soi Post Office (I think).

Nickys Handlebar is fun and the food is good and cheap as well.

Also recommend the Sabai Sabai, excellent food %26amp; very cheap, we ate there for lunch nearly everyday, we were put onto this place by friends %26amp; couldn%26#39;t beleive how full it is each day. The Seahag was also great but not as cheap as the Sabai Sabai more a place for dinner.

Orchids is a favourite of ours, in the same side street as the Sea Hag, good meals and cheap

    Hi

A place called ';56 ';(I THINK,ITS DEFINANTLY A NUMBER)its were all the locals eat.Top of bangla rd turn left and 2 or 3 shops down.great thai meals (pad thai 40 bart)

Have eaten so many times over the last 3 years at Sabai Sabai in laneway near Macca%26#39;s- it%26#39;s just divine and cheap! The green thai curry is magnificent. (Cheap DVD%26#39;s directly opposite there as well!) Only very small place - you should get there early or risk having to wait for a table - though turnover is very fast! Also ';Sweet'; opposite Harry%26#39;s Steakhouse. The pad thai is superb! It%26#39;s also very clean. The head waitress Tip is lovely and we became very good friends with her! No. 6 in Rat-That-Rd on left past Bangla is also small but good. Don%26#39;t eat at hotels - they%26#39;re so expensive. If you only eat at these 3, you%26#39;ll be happy! Enjoy your trip - you%26#39;ll love it!

Thanks everyone for the recommendatıons. We loved Sabaı Sabaı, Sweet and Nickys Handlebar. We also enjoyed the seafood at the nıght food market across the road and just down from Nıckys Handlebar (back towards Bangla road). The fısh here was sensatıonal and around half the prıces of places closer to the beach. Regards, Sharon

Hi thanks for the tips, I stayed at Phuket for 2 wekks and try out some of the recommended restaurants, sabai sabai was quit cheap and good, also the location near the beach was nice, some moments a bit full and have to hurry. I went also to the restaurant across sabai sabai, heared its quit a new place and I must say also deliscious food at cheap price, nice place , friendly staff, it became my favorite !

Explore the alleys across the street from the beach, walking past the street vendors. You%26#39;ll find lots of restaurants with good, cheap food in these courtyards.

    Currency in Thailand (Phuket)

Will I get a better exchange rate in the UK for the Baht or is it better to change currency in Phuket, or simply use an ATM?

We are staying at the Katathani in Kata Noi.

    Currency in Thailand (Phuket)

hi we just came back from phuket you get a better rate there,

    Currency in Thailand (Phuket)

Agreed. You will always get a better rate in Thailand.

i just got mine here and have been watching it for the last month and i got 49.45 on www.travelsupermarket.com but have been told you get a better rate there :)

You will get a better rate in Thailand. The rate changes a little, either up or down, every working day. The change isn%26#39;t too drastic though. Bangkok uses real banks for the most part. Hotels and stores usually have a lower rate.

  • Skytrain at Night

Wondering how safe it is to travel at night up until say 11.00 or is taxi a better option. Planning a sunset cruise then returning to hotel. Thanks

    Skytrain at Night

In my (male) opinion, you%26#39;d be very safe in a taxi, and even SAFER on the BTS.

    Skytrain at Night

MRT and BTS are safe at night: security guards at every entrance of every station.

Oh that%26#39;s good to hear. 2 females travelling and would like to do some shopping after rather than returning to hotel. First time o/s so all very new.

The BTS and MRT aren%26#39;t really affordable for Bangkok%26#39;s dregs. Also, they do a really good job of policing and maintaining the stations and trains.

BTS skytrain is one of the most efficent and cleanest transport systems I ever gone around on and I just keep me fingers crossed that it will in a few years engulf the most sought after areas and connect with the new airport well. At this moment it does quite a few %26#39;good stops%26#39; like entertainment areas, MBK and tourist boats. What strikes me theres uniformed guards on every stop and entrances and like as you dordle a couple of times I accidentally went over %26#39;near edge%26#39;line and the guards whistle out to you and a caution is had. No problem on there whats so ever I just hope it will connect Khao San Road and Chinatown soon, taxis are quite good but give yourself a real Bangkok experience use a tuk-tuk.

use the sky train till its open i think tht is midnight (same goes for Mrt/mtr)...safe and if it goes whr u have cheaper as well...other wise use the taxi (metered or if you have a vague idea of the distance bargain...) was there for 3 days used both widout any prob%26#39;s...

I always think it is safer for you to be in a vehicle like a bus or the Skytrain where other people can come to your aid if a problem comes up.

I like the Skytrain and my only complaint is that I would like it to run an hour or two later than it does now, especially when the new connection from the airport opens up. (My flights always come around midnight, too late to use the Skytrain.)

You will have no worries - the Skytrain makes Sydney trains look third world (which of course they are).

Both MRT and BTS are safe to use at night. There are guards posted at every station and even on the platforms there are guards and/or station service attendants which monitor the area.

Bangkok in general is very safe everywhere you go. I felt very safe no matter what time or place I was in.

    ';Bangkok in general is very safe everywhere you go.';

I might rephrase that as ';Bangkok in general is very safe everywhere [most tourists] go.

There are plenty of opportunities to get into plenty of trouble. But, if you typically stay out of trouble at home, odds are you won%26#39;t find it in Bangkok either.

';SAPHAN TAKSIN'; is the only riverside BTS stop. Make sure your cruise will let you out at the ';SATHORN'; pier, or has a ferry to it.
